Hi All, We've got a big outbreak of EVA in Normandy. Both my mares returned from the studfarm pregnant and healthy so far so good.
At the moment I have my two broodmares, my gelding and the Arab cross Grasse [owned by a friend]
Grasse is the only one who leaves for trailriding in the forest at the moment. I agreed with her owner he would ride alone to prevent risk of ilnesses from outside especially as we have this outbreak of EVA in Normandy[It is going on for at least two months virtually no measures are taken and as far as I can find out the number of sick horses is still very big at the moment]
Now the owner has decided he wants to hunt Grasse this winter. I have told him he can but as soon as she goes to a hunt she cannot come back over here. Does this seem a justified precaution?
Second problem: my gelding should go away to be trained in october should I wait until no disease is being reported anymore?
Any advise is appreciated.
Jos
PS The horses are all in excellent condition and up to date vaccinated for Influenza Tetanus and Rhinopneumonie as the studfarm advised

Hello jos,
Since we cannot judge the risk it is hard for us to answer your specific questions but do agree with you that if you think there is a risk of exposure from movement off and back on to your farm closing down movement prudent.

Thanks Dr. O Imo the risk is high because the disease is not always recognised [the neighbours brought a horse for vacation trailriding from Paris with'just a little cough and a fever']I don't want to imply they all are dangerous but as I have only one horse over here [and for free too]that goes away to be ridden I think I will go on with closing the gates for the moment. We had a hard time getting the little arab pregnant and the eventual foals and their mothers seem the most important to me at the moment.
