Hello, I have a bay QH mare that I bred to a cremello. The baby looked like a palomino when she was born but now she has shed and is very light. What are the chances she will be a cremello? or will she get darker as she gets older? I need to know so I will know what color to register her as. Thank you, Teresa

If your mare is a true bay, then it is not possible for the foal to be a cremello.both parents of a cremello must have a cream gene, which must be visible to the eye in order to be present . For every dark golden palomino, there is probably one that is a light color. I have several that are light palominos, and seveal that are dark. this filly might also darked with age and type of feed, exposure to the sun. The indicator on your foal which will be a dead giveaway as to whether or not it could possibly be a cremello is the eye color. the eye color on a cremello foal is light sky blue, like the blue eyes on a paint horse.A little lighter than the blue eyes of a siamese cat. If the eyes are a dark blue , violet,or slate blue, gray blue, the it is not a cremello. Her eyes will turn a light brown or hazel if she had dark blue eyes at birth.
It is possible that your mare could be a smoky black, but highly unlikely. One of your mare's parents would have to be a dilute, either a palomino, smoky black, or a buckskin for there to be any possiblity that your mare is an odd color of smoky black. is it possible she could also be a smutty buckskin? again, one of her parents must be a smoky black,a buckskin or a palomino for this to be possible. the eye color of the cremello foal is the most definitive feature, they are light blue and will always be that color.

Thank you for the information. I checked the eyes and they are almost black. If she doesn't get darker I will have a hard time drawing the white lines for her registration. But thank you, Teresa
