Hi folks. Maybe Dr.O or someone can help me on this. My 6 yo mare is not pregnant (as far as I know), but has had one previous foal. I have only owned her 6 months so I don't know how long this has been goning on.

I can express clear fluid from her teats - not just a DrOp or two, but 50 ml or so from each side. She is a little bit touchy about having her udder touched, but it is not hot, swollen or painful.

Does this indicate some kind of hormone imbalance? I have had at least 6 mares in my life and don't remember any of them having this (when they weren't pregnant).

Thanks for your help!

Hello Maureane,
Yes hormonal imbalances are possible so if this persists it could be checked out. For more possibilities see Equine Reproduction: Horse Breeding & Artifical Insemination: Breeding Topics Not Covered by the Above: Swollen Teats. I would stop expressing it out however as this may stimulate increased production.

Actually, her teats are not swollen. They seem appropriately "shriveled" for a non-pregnant mare.

She just came out of heat. I will wait a few more days and see if the discharge goes away as she cycles.

Thanks,

The above recommended post deals with non-inflammatory mammary fluid production in the non-pregnant mare.
