Hi Dr. O. I really didn't know what subject to put this under. My gelding who "breeds" the mares had quite a time with his favorite mare in May, I have not seen her come in heat since, mind you they have been doing this for about 12 yrs. She is 24 yrs. old, and should know better. I had the vet out to clean his sheath and inquired about her not coming in heat and infection. He said if she had an infection that might do it, I then asked if it would hurt her in anyway and he said no. Now if they aren't putting on that "show" every 5 mins. when she is in heat it is worth it, so question is do mares stop coming in heat when they get older? Is it true what the vet says about infection? (it shouldn't harm her) and do you think there are any odds she is P.G. (I hope not). She did have a false preg. once laid down and had it and all, also had swollen udder and belly. (only me) we called the fake foal Spook and he was with us for about 3 mos. She seem to be in good health, and vibrant. Also she has had many foals before (real ones) Thanks

If she has been in with a fertile male horse pregnancy is possible, maybe likely. Yes mares to quit cycling as they get older but most healthy 24 yr old mares will still be cycling. I am less confident that an intrauterine infection is always not harmful but if it is mild enough that there is no vaginal discharge and future breeding not important it seems unlikely that you will experience problems.
