Hello, I was hoping you could help me clear up some confusion regarding the results of my mare's uterine culture. (This culture was done without my knowledge by a woman who was leasing the mare...needless to say the lease was terminated immedietly!)I finally got the vet's records which stated a moderate growth of pseudomonas putida. No cytology was done. I am confused by this because when I researched this bacteria it was said to be unable to grow at body temps. Is it possible for this species to grow in the uterus? Is it likely the sample was contaminated? The mare shows no sign of discomfort, even in strenuous jumping activity, her heats are regular and normal, and there is no discharge. I am interested in breeding this mare in the spring and so any advice would be highly appreciated! Thank you!

My research too indicates this is a non-pathogen. I would contact the lab that did the culture and go ahead and have your veterinarian come out and do a cytology and if positive a culture. DrO

I am curious as to why this was a reason to terminate the lease? If you were going to breed this mare this spring wouldn't it be prudent to have a culture taken now so if there were any problems you could rectify them by spring? Is this culture that was taken different from a breeding culture? What was the reason for her taking a clture in the first place? Just curious. EO

to LKR: the reason for terminating the lease was that the woman leasing my mare was NOT allowed to breed her! She evidently was planning to anyway. I will be having a cytology and (if needed) culture done by my own vet soon. Thanks for the concern.
