Hi, i just have two quick questions. I have a Tobiano mare that is mostly white with one brown patch halfway over one eye, and one small spot on her belly. I really want to breed this mare soon but i am new to the whole breeding and figureing out genetics. My two concerns are at the moment is that she has two blue eyes. I have heard that breeding two blue eyed horses together may make the foal have a lighter blue eye and therefore it may go blind. I was wondering if this was true. Also i am concerned about all the white she has. I plan on getting her tested for leathal white gene before i breed her but would i be smarter in picking a stud that doesn't have much color and doesn't through as much color or does it even matter. I know the basics on when breeding certain color types, but i'm just concerned about all her white!

I don't know who told you the lighter blue eye business but that is bunk. With all the white she has and the blue eyes you probably have a homozygous mare which means you could breed her to a solid qtr horse, TB, or a tobiano paint and come up with a colored foal. Don't breed to an overo paint. EO

I agree with LKR about the eyes: nonsense. About the other it depends on your goals. Though there are general rules concerning the lethal white overo gene makeup there are occasional exceptions. It appears that this is not a simple genetic pattern and unexplained LW foals have occured. If your goal is to not perpetuate the gene or avoid a LW foal at all costs, you should have your mare tested. DrO

Your mare is a tobiano if she is mainly white, I think, but you should have her tested, because most paints anymore are combinations, and with the blue eyes she could also have the LWO gene.
