So it's snow and ice outside with big winds blowing-- time to plan for 2009 foals! Has anyone tried to influence foal gender through mare condition? Any luck? What did you do? I am confused by the research in this area. One study at https://beheco.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/10/5/472 claims that mares in better condition produce more males. This seems to contradict the recent study summarized on HA that claims that mares gaining condition produce more fillies. Am I reading the studies correctly? Would my luck be as good waving palm fronds and chanting?

I wouldn't mess around with "condition" to try and produce fillies or colts. I would have all in very good condition just to produce a foal period. However, supposedly, the older a stallion is he is supposed to produce more fillies. Basket Weave is 26 and when he bred mares last year, they produced even steven, colts and fillies. So much for that. I do know that acidic conditions of the reproductive tract will possibly affect filly/colt ratios. More acidic, more fillies. For humans, if you want a girl you need to doushe with a vinegar based product. EO

I once bred a mare to an older stallion. He hadn't sired a colt for 10 years. Of course, I get the only colt that he sired in the 11 years before he passed away, so don't ask me.

Interestingly I mention on a ID forum about the mare condition imapcting gender and this year we had a plethora of fillies born...which is a blessing for any rare breed. Im not saying that it worked or that they even tried that...just saying....hmmmmm
