Hi, I had my mare ultrasounded this morning (day 18) and has been checked in foal, with everything appearing like a perfect pregnancy for day 18 with the exception of some edema (sp?). This is her 3rd pregnancy and has never had any issues. Cultured clean before AI. We are going to ultrasound her again on Monday and hope that the edema starts to go away and the fetus continues to grow, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen anything similar. I am concerned as any edema at this time is not a good sign I'm sure. I am wondering if she is possibly absorbing the fetus and coming into heat in the process. She isn't showing any signs of heat. She has 3 other follicles in the other horn but there is not a dominant one, so it doesn't appear that she is cycling. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Shawna

Hello Shawna, Transient thinkening (which has a bit of a star burst pattern like edema) of the dorsal wall of the uterus in the day 18 to 21 day range of pregnancy is not unusual. More important is that you have a vesicle of the correct size: lack of growth of the vesicle is usually the early sign of early embryonic loss. There are some who believe this is a sign of progesterone deficiency and start Regumate. Studies have shown this does not increase the 40 day pregnancy rate, but the practice persists. We do not treat such mares that are otherwise healthy. DrO

Thanks for the info DrO. We ultrasounded again today (day 21) and the edema or transient thickening is gone. The vesicle is the correct size and everything appears 100% normal. My vet was a little concerned, she never recalled seeing that before. I guess I was a little pyrenoid, so I am glad to here that this is not an unusual occurance.
