We have a mare that is about 20 year old and weaned a foal in Febuary. She had mastitis in her bag a few years back after a retained placenta and one of her teats was extremely large. We always have had to work with her when she has a colt to get it to nurse both sides. Now the other normal teat has a hole in the side of it that is steadily dripping milk and this constant milk production is keeping the other one full as well. Is there anything we can do short of surgery??? And yes the hole is in the side of the bag, not where the milk would normally come out.

Brian, you need to have the laceration examined to make the correct decision but it would surprise me if the decision to stitch this close is not made. As long as milk is draining I don't think it will heal up and there is the very real possibility of the teat becoming infected from this wound.
