A mare, who is ~10 days post foaling, has been brought back to our ranch for breeding. The vet ultrasounded her today and said she had a misshapen 70 mm follicle. He is coming back tomorrow to be absolutely certain she ovulated. This is an Andalusian mare, who in past years, ovulated with much smaller follicles. The vet is somewhat concerned that she may be developing a hemorrhagic follicle &/or won't ovulate at all. Anyway, this is unusual for this particular mare. Also, when she was inseminated this morning by our ranch staff, a small amount of mucous was noted on the glove when the inseminator's hand was removed. We breed ~ 30 mares/ year with 75 - 80% preg. rates. We rarely see any mucous or discharge at the time of insemination. However, we only breed a few mares per year on foal heat. My husband wanted to get your opinion re: whether this could be normal 10 days post partum. The options we have are: asking the vet to flush her tomorrow when he ultrasounds her or driving her to a tertiary equine center for culture and evaluation. Since she isn't our mare and we are hesitant to transport a baby and mare we don't know, this is not our best option... The owner lives several hours away... The owner, because it is so late in the year, would really like her to conceive on foal heat. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Judy 0 0 \_/

Yes you would expect more exudate on a foal heat and mucous itself not a sign of problems. The ultrasound will be your best indicator of a potential problem, if there is cloudy fluid present oxytocin and flush will improve the pregnancy rate. For more on how we do this procedure see, Diseases of Horses » Reproductive Diseases » Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility » Uterus Infection and Inflammation: Endometritis. DrO

Thanks for the follow-up! The vet yesterday didn't mention any fluid at all in this mare and I believe he would have. Typically he checks all the mares early in the morning. Then we collect the appropriate stallion for each mare that is ready and inseminate after he is gone. He is returning this afternoon. We will ask him to pay special attention to fluid retention in this mare. If he sees it, he can probably flush and use oxytocin while he is here. Thanks again, Judy 0 0 \_/
