We are considering purchasing a new colt (when weaned). We were not expecting this color!! Sorrel Overo X Brown SBP = Bay Went to color calculator, but didn't give choice for "brown".

Well, after a little more reading, I answered my own question! They have added information on the animal genetics site about brown! "Brown" is entered as "bay". I have attached a pic of the mare; she is registered as brown. I always thought brown would have light points, like a mule. Learn something everyday!

Depending on the breed registry, brown means different things. I had a quarter horse that was registered as brown. He had black points (mane and tail and legs all black). I did some reading and discovered that according to the AQHA a bay horse has red in its base coat. My guy did not so was brown and not bay. He was very similar in color to the picture of your mare. I seem to remember there being a color chart somewhere on the AQHA website.

Michelle, the muzzle on your horse is it black or does it have red in it .. ? On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

Well, she's not mine. But it looks to be black to me. I've only seen the pic, and it wasn't until I REALLY studied the pic this morning the I realized she had darker tips that the rest of her body. I would LOVE to have that color on a colt!!! Funny thing is that a friend of mine has the sister to my sorrel gelding. She is very much a dark chocolate color, but has a black mane and tail. Probably very similar to this mare...but AQHA calls her bay, and there is NO red in her anywhere. Go figure. Of course, doesn't matter to me if the baby is green.... I have been dying to get my hands on a baby with these bloodlines! This baby looks red in the pics; he was about 1/2 hour old. Think he will turn out brown? Thanks for any answers from someone with a more experienced eye than me.

just a guess here, but think this foal will turn out to be a true bay, maybe even a blood bay * more red in the color * I have a young horse the same color as the mare above, BUT he has more red coloring around his muzzle then that mare.. We can't see a difference in the color of his mane/ knees or coat.. so i have said he is a black bay! COLOR? we all see it a little different.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

He looks to be a traditional bay to me, also. Very sweet - love the blaze.

I thought so, too! We are looking to "step up" to the higher level of halter horse, and this baby may be it.

Cute foal! When the babies were a little older, we used to check the hair on their hind legs where they didn't have so much fuzz. My bet is that he'll be dark bay or brown. No matter what, that blaze is fetching. Lucky you.

I meant to say the hair on the hind legs, covered by their little tail.
