How dangerous is it for a 2 yr old mare with an umbilical hernia to go through the gestation/foaling process? Would it be more dangerous to have her hernia fixed while she is pregnant, than to just let her be? He wasn't suppose to be able to get in with her, but now that he has, I need to know what to do.

Welcome Sarah,
That would depend on the size of the hernia and which layers of the tissue have a defect. Can you provide this information? If not an examination by a veterinarian would be your best course. But this may be academic as may be possible to abort the pregnancy. How long has it been since the filly was bred?

Thank you,
When you say size, if you mean how big the hole is, I can stick one finger through it. I can push the hole thing back inside and it feels like soft tissue only. She has never had any problems with it, but it has just never closed up. I caught him with her about 3 weeks ago now.
