Dr O --I have just had my mare AI'd for the second time with frozen semen. She was inseminated yesterday morning after injecting to bring on ovulation which was slow - she was apparantly not showing signs of heat before and her follicles weren't softening. She's just been brought home and the yard staff tell me she is still showing obvious heat signs. I know ovulation normally occurs a day before the end of the heat, but if she was pregnant would this still happen?

Yes whether she settles or not, she will continue with heat for a day or two after ovulation.

As it happens my mare did not settle on that breeding and has since been covered again with fresh semen - but still no foal. The vet thinks she just isn't going to settle though he can't explain why - she is healthy although had some complications with a previous foaling at 3 which he thought might cause some minor problems with future foalings) She was bred on a 42 mm follicle with 3 hour old fresh semen and ovulated 30-34 hours later. In you opinion is this too long and is it worth trying one more with my remaining dose of semen and shortening the gap? I should mention this mare has no future other than a brood mare (see my previous posts in Disease of the spine and pelvis). Is it likely that all three failures have just been bad luck/timing?

The timing is OK but that does not mean she can't settle. Can you describe the nature of that injury in the past foaling and what exams have been done on your mare and what the results are. All the vet said was she had had a hard time foaling last time and there was some stitching and scar tissue -I think he said in the vulva rather than cervix but I may have mis-remembered. He wasn't of the opinion that it was anything that would prevent her conceiving.He did say she could have a blocked fallopian tube for all he knew (trying to explain the lack of luck settling) but even if I had an endoscopy done it might be inconclusive. Would this be the next logical step, along with cytology/culture which I don't believe has been done yet?

The article gives a logical progression of diagnostics Anna-Marie. You WANT all the tests to come back inconclusive because that would suggest, but not guarantee, your mare could settle.
