Hi Dr. O-- Mare was in transitional heat for just shy of three weeks. I did not US her during this period, just teased diligently. 6 days after she finally stopped showing heat, I had her US'd to see if we could give lutalyse and short cycle her. Mare had a CL on one ovary, and a 35 follicle on the other. My vet gave her HCG to try to cause the follicle to ovulate. This was Saturday. I took her back in today- the follicle is still there, but it has regressed to a 30. Vet said not to do anything, and start teasing her again this weekend. So my question is-- what happens to this follicle? My vet indicated that she should come back into heat on schedule but couldn't really give me an explanation of what exactly was going on. Is it normal for a transitional mare to hold onto a follicle like this and not ever OV it? Or is she eventually going to OV it and then I'll have to start back over? I believe my vet said it might dissolve-- is this not the same as ovulating? Mare had no heat in her uterus, and is not showing any signs of heat when teased. Thanks! CC

Hello CC, Whether it will go ahead and ovulate on the next cycle or degenerate or become a benign cyst is anyone's guess but I would not breed this follicle if I could help it. Only by closely monitoring it you will know in time what it's fate will be. With it shrinking I don't think it is likely to ovulate and during the transitional periods this type of irregular follicular behavior is common. A possible explanation is the FSH rise and LH surge came before this follicle was ready to ovulate so it is in limbo. If her cycles continue to be irregular you could try a 14 days course of ReguMate to get all the hormones working together. DrO
