Dr. O, I read that a simple way to add protein and nutrients to a pregnant mare's diet is adding calf-manna. I have two mares in the last trimester--actually the last 6 weeks I think. How much calf-manna should I add to their oats? I give the about 3 lbs/oats/day.

It looks like they have specific horse feed too.

Hello PRUs,
Your question deals with your mares nutrition as though only the oats and calf manna matter. Just as important in dealing with this question would be the amount and quality of the forage fed. Also of importance in answering this question is the condition of the mare.

The calf manna should be looked at as a supplement to get the total protein (and to a lesser extent the calcium) of a pregnant mare in the last trimester up to around 14 to 16% of the diet. The article associated with this posting area has a good discussion on these principles. By reading it carefully and then using the link in the article to get to Overview of Nutrition I think you can come to a better conclusion than I can. If you get stuck tell me where you are stuck at and I will try and get you moving forward again.
