My mare carried her foal to term (only a few days beyond her due date) but the delivery was "red bag". The foal was small (50 lbs.) but seemed normally developed except for size. It has been suggested that the foal was not viable and was aborted even though it was carried full term. Would a low grade infection throughout the pregancy likely cause this and if so what might be done now in February to prepare this mare for rebreeding? At the very least we will have a cytology done, infusions if indicated. Can you advise as to the timing involved? If she were to be flushed etc, would we wait for her to cycle and then retest before AI?

Was a complete necropsy and histopath done on the foal and histopath on the placenta? This may answer many of your questions. Concerning rebreeding I think cytology and culture would be the way I would approach this problem. Unless there were signs of improper involution or discharge I would begin checking at foal heat or just after. I would want a normal cytology before proceeding with breeding. Unfortunately red bag tends to be a reoccuring problem and may be due to placentitis or incompetant cervix. You may want to study the article we have on placentitis for the information on late term monitoring of pregnancies. DrO
