My TWH mare Carmen gave birth to a beautiful filly Sunday night. I just wanted to thank Dr. O for his articles so I knew what to do. Carmen was a maiden mare and while giving birth she was really straining. When the hooves emerged (about 20 minutes after her water broke) I noticed that the baby was coming out sideways. After a couple more pushes from mom, the baby wasn't moving down at all (now it's been about 30 minutes). I broke the bag and waited for the next contraction and started pulling the baby out. It took me 4 contractions pulling as hard as I could to get the baby out. I don't know if Carmen could have delivered on her own, but after 30 minutes I decided to intervene.

Had the Vet out yesterday to make sure everything was fine. She told me I did the right thing and that Carmen was bruised, but nothing serious. The filly is in great shape and the Vet couldn't believe how big she is.

The strange part is the filly is a bay. Mom is chestnut and dad is pure black. Both mom and dad's parents are also black (must be bay in her line somewhere). A bay was the last color I expected, but she is gorgeous.

I will post a picture later. Again, thanks Dr. O for your articles or I would have been lost at the delivery.

Often the foal color is not what they turn out to be. Black babies often look brown or bay. She still might be black or chestnut when her baby hair sheds.

Ella,

What you say is true, but my last foal was black and had the mousey color all over her body. This filly only has the black on her legs with a black mane and tail, so I don't think she will be chestnut. Also, her body color is very light brown with a tan muzzle. I also found out her grandsire was bay.

Actually, it really doesn't matter what color she turns out to be, I'm just thankful she and my mare are healthy.

Thanks Patricia.

This is my 3rd foal and first from a maiden mare. Mom has been a real trooper, she doesn't mind anyone coming in to see her baby. She is the first foal I've had that at 2 days old loves people. She always leaves Mom when we go in and comes to us to get scratched. I have been touching her all over, feet, ears, mouth, halter on and off and took her temperature with no resistence whatsoever from her. She even let the Vet take her blood without trying to get away. I think she's a keeper.

Let me second the congratulations Karen. A little sideways is within normal but the time frame for expulsion of the fetus was definitely slow...great job and hope you can post a picture of the foal.

Congratulations!
It is possible to get a bay from the parents' combination of colors. The black horse will not throw a bay unless the chestnut has an "agouti" gene. Agouti turns black into bay by restricting the color to the points. A black cannot carry the agouti gene because he would then be a bay. It doesn't do anything on a chestnut because agouti only affects the placement of black pigment, not red.
There are a lot of good color sites that explain this. Do a search on "horse color genetics" and you will find out the explanation.
Have fun with your baby, and good job on the midwifery!

Thanks everybody and thank you Erika for the color info, I really appreciate it. It's been too windy here for me to turn her out in our arena yet. We hope to be able to do that tomorrow. Mom is wanting to get out of the foaling stall, but it's big enough 30x30 for Rio to run around.

She started with the diarrhea today so I'm off to the store for some vaseline.

Sara, I was really pleased with her conformation, and agree she will be a great mover. Both mom & Dad have an awesome gait and are very smooth. I did alot of research before breeding to the stallion I chose and am very happy with the results.

Thanks everyone,

Dr.O I named her Rio because her mother's registered name is Carmen Miranda. Carmen Miranda did a movie called "That Night in Rio", which will be my filly's registered name. We also live on the Rio de Fernando river in Taos, New Mexico that was another reason.

I'm really looking forward to watching her grow up. Of course, I think she is special, but isn't every foal....

What beautiful country you live in, Karen! I'm surprised you have TWH in that area; I always think of them as an East Coast breed, tho' I know they're all over. And, I love your "line of reason" for her name. Her registered name is great! And somehow, it seems to suit her.

Your filly is beautiful.

When my new foals get diarrhea I give them some Pepto Bismo. Are you giving mare alfalfa hay? That will give the foal diarrhea. If it gets really bad the foal will get dehydrated and need vet care. I had one last year that spent 4 days at vet hosp on IV's.

I breed TWHs in NE Kansas and have four foals due starting in April. I have my vet reconfirm pregnancies at 60-75 days and determine sex of foals at the same time. He hasn't missed yet so I can expect 3 colts and 1 filly this year.
