Posted on Wednesday, May 10, 2000 - 1:21 pm: My vet has prescribed a prenatal vitamin for my mare. The vitamin supplement she prescribed is either Select-Equi Cell or Equi-Select Cell or something along those lines. Has anyone ever heard of this supplement before and if so what are your experiences with it. Is there a better prenatal vitamin. My other question is does this healthy mare really need prenatal vitamins or is this just an extra precaution to make sure she gets all the vitamins she needs to help her foal develop normally. |

In general if a healthy horse has access to good quality pasture 6 hours a day or more or ample quanities of excellent quality fresh hay, there are no known other vitamin requirements for pregnancy.DrO |

She will be moved at the end of this month to another farm where she will have access to a better pasture all day and night once she gets use to the richer grass. She will be continued on her Purina Strategy and hay as well with access to water and a salt block. She is an easy keeper who could have afforded to lose some pounds before she was bred. |

She is currently on alflafa and oat hay with 2 lb senior equine. I was wondering what might some good sources of Vit A and Beta-carotene be(carrots come to mind). If carrots are the best answer, then how much for a large horse. What about your typical brood mare supplement - are these synthesized well enough, or would you just recommend injections at the time of breeding according to your article. I am hoping to try again in a few weeks assuming some uterine tests come back with good results. How long does it take to establish acceptable levels of nutrition to benifit breeding. |
