I am wondering about some behaviour my mare showed. She is in heat right now. I was leading her to her stall, we had to walk past a mare who was in her stall. My mare squatted and peed, and also clicked her teeth in the same way a foal will when he meets a strange horse. Any idea what this means? Thanks

The opening and closing of the mouth (usually with the head lowered) is a sign of submission. Is this mare young? A maiden? The mare in the stall may be dominant over her. A lot of our mares tease in to other mares. And if we have a mare that doesn't like the tease stallion we try her with another mare. Has worked a few times.

As far as I know the two mares don't know each other. The mare in question is a dominant mare in her pasture, she is an older experienced broodmare. I have never seen an older mare do this kind of behaviour.

My mare was in season recently and for days, even when she wasn't showing estrus in the stall, as soon as she was turned out in the paddock she would go straight to another mare, and just wink and squirt nonstop (actually CASCADE describes it better) . A huge puddle would form where she stood. She ignored the gelding who was also there, and he didn't show any interest in her either. Lynn

alright i've got a stupid question. What does it mean when you have a mare in with a stud and she sprays? this mare has been in the pen with the stud for a long time and i was wondering if the mare had already been covered or if she is giving him a signal that she's not in heat. Any help...thanks.

A mare may squat and urinate (break down) to show that she is in heat and receptive. Or she may spray urine to say "no!" Every heard the expression "pissing mad?" Generally, the difference is in the attitude of the mare.

As Linda say are her ears, eyes, and body saying "COME, squirt, GET, squirt, ME squirt, BIG BOY. Or are they saying, "I squirt, WILL squirt, KNOCK squirt, YOUR squirt, LIGHTS OUT! DrO

Well, she usually only squirts once when he comes near and it does seem like a stay away signal
