I have a mare that I thought was pregnant but now am not sure. I bought her as a riding mare and not pregnant but about three weeks ago, after starting to suspect because of her increasing belly, she started to make bag. Her bag went fron the normal barely visible teats to enough bag to see it from behind when she lifted her tail.
My mare's bag enlarges enough that the teat areas are filled and quite hard but there is still a 'valley' between the teats.
Then they reduce so they are small and soft; at this point they are about the size of my other mare's bag who is confirmed 10 months preg.
Is this normal for a preg mare? Could this be a hormone imbalance and not a pregnancy?

Lori,
Yes, this is normal for a pregnant mare. Mares will fill up when standing around and then walk it off when active. When a mare doesn't walk off her bag she will usually wax shortly thereafter.

Have you thought of getting her checked by a vet to make sure? Feeding requirements and other considerations are much different for a full term pregnant mare than an open mare. It would be best to know for sure.

Linda, OK good to know. When I got her in the fall she was a bit poor so she has been on a weight increase diet complete with supplements, added mineral, oil, since I suspected she might be pregnant I have fed her accordingly complete with vacinations.
I have no problem getting a vet out, just would like to co-ordinate a few things so to minimize trips.
