I plan to breed my TB mare in the spring to a Percheron and am looking at 6 different stallions as prospective mates. All 3 breeders pasture breed only so AI is not an option.Does anyone have any experiences with cross breeding between TB's and draft stallions? My concern is about possible pelvic injury to the mare as one of the breeders mentioned another non-draft mare they had bred was perforated by the stallion. Thanks for any input.

I can't comment specifically on the breeding process, never having done that. But, do you know if the stallions you are considering have already bred to TB mares? What were the results? The thing that worries me most about 1st generation draftxTBs is that you get 1/2 of one, 1/2 of the other - draft front end, TB backend, or vice-versa, or draft body, TB legs, or TB body, draft legs. In other words, mismatched body parts. Perforation is always a possibility with live cover, regardless of breed, with older mares being more susceptible. You'll have a better change at a proportioned foal if your mare is a heavy TB, or the stallion is a light draft. I have seen beautiful babies from this cross though, one of which I would particularly love to buy!

May I suggest that you look a little further (internet) for a Perch stallion who is available for IA? And who has cross babies (TB-Perch) on the ground? Might save some pasture breeding concerns as well as give you "some" idea of what you might get.

Thanks for the input. Gives me more to think about.

Just want to add that I have such a cross and she is a lovely animal - well proportioned, VERY smart and just a dream. Hope you get something as good as I did.
