  Discussion on Failure to ejaculate

Dear Sir
I have a 16 year old arabian stallion who was breeding pretty good with no problems until a surgery to his fetlock was done last month.
When he was judged to be sound again we tried collecting him. On the first attempt he thrust his penis in the AV but would not thrust anymore. We changed the AV and he would thrust normally but would fail to ejaculate. He was given a pain block and tried again but the same thing happened.
We decided to rest hinm but i am a little worried considering the stallion's age . We ran blood tests on him and everyhting came back normal
Have you encountered such a case before . Please let me know

Hello Omar,
Lack of performance from a stallion in an AV is a common problem. Though you may start seeing slightly declining sperm counts at 16 I would not expect a sudden cessation of ejaculation, like this. If this is a rear ankle and is painful it certainly might cause these problems, blocking may have felt so odd when standing on his hind legs that this too interfered with proper performance. Unfortunately there can be dozens of other reasons and most of them are managerial.

You need to review the lameness evaluation and your procedures> If the horse is truly sound you need to experiment with different circumstances for collection. If this fails you need to have a good medical work up.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your quick response. What do you mean by a good medical work up?

A good general veterinary exam but that includes an emphasis on the reproductive system.
