If a mare was a twin herself, will it make her more likely to get pregnant with twins?

Probably but so few get born that we don't know for sure.

Should I have her ultra sounded to make sure she doesn't have twins, or let it run it's course and see if one of the embryos sloughs?

Posted on Monday, Apr 16, 2001 - 9:52 pm:

An ultra sound is a good idea so that if there are twins you can pop one to give the other the best chance of being healthy and survive.

Hello All,
David as Julie recommends ultrasounding is your best protection against this problem. We have an article on handling twinning problems in mares: see : Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Twinning and Management of Twin Embryos.
