I have a ten-year-old mare that did not check in foal at 16 days after the first breeding. She was cultured and it showed a low grade yeast infection. They were able to flush her three or four times before the second breeding and the vet said it didn't look too bad. Also, since she was coming back in relatively early they decided to put her on Regumate (10cc a day)in case she had low progesterone. She was checked today and was again not in foal. She had a 4.8 follicle which the vet said should be impossible for a mare on Regumate. He has decided to do another culture to see if she still has a yeast infection. If yes, he will send it to a lab to develop a specific treatment. He said the yeast infection could explain why she didn't get in foal but he has never seen a mare that had that size follicle while on Regumate. The mare has had two previous foals but absorbed last year's foal somewhere between 18 and 40 days last year. Does anyone have any suggestions? The vet said at some point I may need consider culling the mare.
