Discussion on Mare ultrasounded at 14 days but.... | |

Posted on Sunday, Jul 15, 2001 - 4:27 pm: We have a mare that foaled just about 40 days ago. She was bred back on her foal heat but on ultrasounding at 14 days post ovulation we could not find an embryo. We are now at 30 plus days post breeding but the mare has not had an obvious heat. We have decided not to breed again this year as it is getting so late. However the mare is the type that "really" shows when she in in season so I am wondering if there is a possibility that she could in fact be in foal. We have had the mare ultrasounded for rebreeding prior to our decision not to breed again but only really looked for follicle size as we just assumed from her previous pregnancy ultrasound that she wasn't. There was not a lot of activity on her ovaries and now with no heat cycle overtly happening I am wondering if there is still a possibility that she could in fact be in foal?Any thoughts or experiences?? I will eventually have our vet out to test her one more time if over the next few weeks we still don't see her "showing" to the other horses. Thanks! |

Posted on Monday, Jul 16, 2001 - 9:05 am: Hi Dave.I had a mare go through a false pregnancy last year. She cycled, and was bred, in June, but didn't come back in heat, even though the ultrasound showed no pregnancy. Because it was late in the year, my vet recommended just letting nature take it's course, because there are drugs and hormones they can give her to stimulate cycling (I can't remember now what they were). I decided, that since I wasn't in a hurry, and wouldn't breed again until this year, to just let nature work. My mare finally started cycling again in Sept. She then stopped for the winter, and started up again this spring, right on schedule. She's now pregnant, with no major issues this year. I would have the vet check again for pregnancy, just to settle your own mind, but unless there's a major problem, with ovaries or uterus, I'd just let her be, and let her body work it out. I hope this helps. Heidi |

I need to get a vet out today for some other biz so will probably haver her check this mare just for good order sake. Thanks! Dave |
