Discussion on Pathology Report/Endometritis | |

Posted on Monday, Sep 3, 2001 - 4:13 pm: Dr.O, I have a question about my mare, she is 17, I'm trying to get her in foal and got the report back that she has severe, chronic, superficial and deep endometritis. Treatment is needed as this inflammation will interfere with conception or cause early embryonic death. I have treated her with a uterine cath.and ampicilun for 5 days and the patholigist recommende using a systemic antibiotic as a follow up, my vet so don't bother, but the fact of the matter is, I am bothered. My mare has never had a problem in the past concieving, or foaling, she has had 3 foals and has been open 8 years. When this biopsy was done she had a puss pocket that developed after the breeding, Eosinophils were few, scattered, immediately under and/or in the epithelium. My questions are, am I wasting my time and my mares? Can she concieve and carry? Does she need any type of treatment to make this possible? What course of action do you recommend, my vet says buy a foal, well I cannot buy a foal like I would have if I can get her in foal, I know I seem stubborn about this but I am not sure that my mare is finished, Am I wrong. I will respect your opinion and do what is right. If you need more info I can supply it.Thanks for your time and your wonderfull web site, I am a happy member. Sue |

What has happened is that many of the glands that are responsible for normal gestation are replaced with scar tissue. If this is so the combination of age and condition of the uterus make conception difficult but not impossible. Most studies suggest your mares chance at conception and carrying the foal are around 10 to 20% per cycle. Only you can decide if this is a waste of time to continue to try. If you decide to continue see Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility: Uterine Infection and Inflammation for suggestions on how to treat and minimize further problems and for ways to increase fertility. Posted on Tuesday, Sep 4, 2001 - 3:12 pm: Dr. O, thank you for getting back to me so fast. My mare has been classed as a 2B, the Stallion is 1 1/2 miles from me and I really would like to get her in foal. Can you tell me anything else that might help me to settle this mare? I will read the articles that you suggested in further detail. Are there any supplements that you would suggest putting her on besides Mare Plus?Have a great day Sue |
