  Discussion on Cribbing Ten-Year-Old TB
Author Message

Posted on Friday, Oct 19, 2001 - 3:23 pm:

I have recently leased a ten-year-old TB mare that learned to crib while on the track. I plan to breed her, and know I will need to keep her cribbing collar on during her gestation and after the foal is born--until it is weaned and no longer under her influence.

Is there a way I can rehabilitate her from this vice? She is now out of her previous box stall, and has a large paddock that connects to a larger pasture area. She is currently alone, and I have removed the collar. If she is allowed a pasture companion (without the collar) will she train the new mare to crib as well? Did I make a mistake in removing the collar? Must she wear it always unless she is being ridden?

Thanks for your help. Nancy in Medford, OR

Hello Nancy,
Most of your questions are answered in detail in the article associated with this forum. Just click on the title above, Stable Vices: Cribbing, Weaving, and Others then click on the articles title.

She only needs to wear the collar during times she is likely to crib. If uncertain give her the benefit of the doubt until she proves otherwise.

Thanks, but the article won't open...that is why I asked for help. I don't want to give this mare a set-back, and I would like her to have a companion.
