Hi, I am a new member, mostly lurking. I have a young horse who is still growing, but is old enough to ride and is in training. I believe his back will definitely change shape as he finishes growing and fills out. The two saddles I currently have do not fit him. I am thinking of getting an old used saddle that fits him until he finishes growing, then getting a nicer one that fits. Does anyone else have any experience with a problem like this, and what did you do?

Alicia, I have started a number of young horses, and I have gone down the route of changing saddle as the horse matures. If you can get a good price for your 'used' saddle you can sometimes trade up in the 'class' of saddle you buy! I know other people who have bought an adjustable synthetic saddle, and just altered it to fit as the animal has grown. I think it depends on your situation, and how near/amenable your saddler is. I am lucky in having a saddler who knows me and lets me take saddles out to try until I find one that fits (usually it's not the cheapest LOL!). The only things to look out for on second hand saddles are uneven stuffing and broken trees, but they are more of a problem if you buy privately/at an auction than from a saddler. Good luck with your youngster, which ever way you decide to go!

Thanks, I thought that might be the way I would have to go (youngsters are wonderful, but not nearly as cheap as some who haven't raised them might think ). I plan on getting a lady I have used before to come out and fit him with a nice used one. Thanks!!

Try looking into a saddleright pad (www.saddleright.com). Unless your saddle just fits horribly, this pad MAY be the thing that takes you from one saddle to the next as your horse matures and builds muscles. I will never ride either of my horses without it again.
