I think lunging is a little hard on the legs to build muscle. Trail riding can't be beat for building muscle and condition in my mind. The article associated with this forum gives some specific regimens.

Dear Peter,

You might try free lunging if time or circumstance does not allow for trailriding. You need an arena with straight walls. This has the advantage of not forcing the horse into too difficult a frame such as lunging or a round pen might require.

You can work her with or without tack. You can also add side reins provided she is in sufficient condition and that there is no danger of her getting the reins caught on the walls/fence of the arena.

With some practice you can have her do athletic turns on front and rear, transitions up and down, figure-8's, and more.

Good luck and let us know how she progresses.
