Discussion on Changes in gait under saddle

We've recently broken a TWH stallion and have him under saddle. Without a rider, this boy is unbelievable. His back strides are so long that he gets wrinkles in his butt when walking. His front feet come a good 1.5 - 2' off the ground. More than one has said he has the finest natural gait they've ever seen. Yet, with a rider on his back (my trainer weighs 100 pounds soaking wet) his stride is reduced a good 40% in his hind legs and his front legs. We've tried different saddles (wider, narrower), different bits (snaffle, TWH show bits, etc.), weights on his front legs, but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

How old is he and how long has he been going under saddle? This could well be a case of a young horse that just hasn't yet learned to carry himself under a saddle/rider yet. Give him some time to learn and build up his muscles and this problem could take care of itself. Hope so :)

He's mature and strong as an ox which is why I was curious. He's only been under saddle a month, though. I'm sure you're right about needing more strength and experience. I'm probably too impatient :-) Thanks for the feedback, Suzanne.

Hi,
I agree with Suzanne, give him some time. Don't push for too much too fast. Let him develop.

Thanks, Janette. When you find one as good as this one, it's hard to be patient. BTW, I think your forum is great.

Yeah, it IS hard to be patient :) We tend to forget that, although horses are very strong, they have to learn to balance themselves in a whole new way to carry a rider. And of course, build up muscles they haven't used in such ways before. Just as if we had never carried a back pack before and decided to go on an all day hike carrying a 50 lb pack. We would be staggering and sore as *#@%! :O

Good luck and keep us posted!
