We are looking for a cause for sudden-onset, severe illness w/ the symptoms of tremor, inability to swallow, symptoms of colic, weakness, temp of 105, some ataxia at first, although resolved. Mare is being treated w/ electrolytes,IV fluids at the rate of 6 liters/hour, Calcium, Dextrose, Tetracycline, Penicillin, and Cimetidine. We are in the 5th day of treatment. She had a nasogastric tube for three days for gastric decompression, but it is out now w/ success. Progress is slow. She is now able to tolerate three handfuls of wet hay twice a day. I thought maybe Oak poisoning. Anyone know about this? Thank You!

Dear Dr. O,Thank you for the info. on Oak poisoning. I did run off that article earlier to send to my friend who owns the horse. I thought maybe someone else might also be able to add their personal experience w/ Oak poisoning.I don't really know if that is what we are dealing with as the vet has not given a causal factor in the mare developing this condition. Thank you, Paula Burr
