Suppose your pup is now used to being around the horses and is ready to come on a ride with you. What I have done with my dog and she's awsome on trails is teach her the command "Trail up." I indicate with my arm which direction we're going or point my horse in the direction and she gets the idea. Trail up means down the trail in front of me. I don't like her following behind but sometimes she will if she's tired and just wants to hang out. She's happier out front and has learned that when we get to a trail crossing to stop and wait for me to indicate which way we're going. She just jogs along in front of me and has a blast. If she stops to sniff something of particular interest and the horse is approaching, I also taught her the command "go go go" meaning get moving and out of the way. It's great fun to have your dog with you just don't overdo it at a young age. Happy trails Holly

I too take my dog to the barn, but not on the trails with me -- more for my horse's sanity than my own. I think its important to remember than each dog has different instincts regarding herd animals and will act differently around them. As the others have said, the best thing you can do is just expose your dog to the environment and be aware of its behaviour.
