I have heard that you shouldn't fit a saddle to a horse until the horse is fit. OK that seems to make sense but how fit? My mare has been ridden 2-4 times a week for several months now. She is not really fit nor does she have the topline that she will one day. However, I have also read a recent article by a saddle maker, that says fit is somewhat over done. What is the likelyhood that a saddle bought now may not fit her in a year of steady work. Oh, I am talking english. I use my Eamor on every and all horses with the exception of very narrow horses. The only problem I have had with fit with it is it is too long in the back for some horses. Thanks Lori

IMO some minor fit problems can be adjusted with a saddle pad. I used to use a thin black dense foam pad under my dressage saddle when one of our stallions was coming back from and injury, but now that he's back in shape I no longer need it and use just a thin cotton pad. I haven't noticed any problems or difference in behaviour or performance.

I always fit saddles to mine during the summer when they getting the most riding but also are in good condition. They might not necessarily be totally fit, but are likely to be at their largest size due to better grazing. I would also rather have a saddle that is on the wider side (meaning if the horse DrOps off over winter the saddle may become too wide) but then I would use pads if I knew the horse was going to put condition back on spring/summer. If you fit a saddle which becomes too narrow (say you had one fitted over winter but the horse puts on condition come spring) then you have no option but to get another saddle!
