My 11 yr old TB gelding makes a squeaking/rubbing noise when we trot. At first I thought it was my new saddle - but he does it when I just lunge him-no saddle. I have heard that geldings sometimes just make this noise. Someone else said he needs to build up muscles. What is this and is there some kind of conditioning that will make this noise stop?

I believe that air gets in the sheath and it makes a kind of "squonking" noise.
Some do it all the time, some never.
Mine only does it when he is agitated.

If the noise is coming from the sheath, give it a good cleaning (» Care for Horses » Disease Prevention and Health Care » Sheath Cleaning in Horses) this helps some but not all.

Only one of my geldings make that noise and at first (and I had heard) that it was a dirty sheath. I cleaned it thoroughly thinking that would take care of the problem but and it did help some. I asked the vet and he also said it was from air in the sheath. So you're both right!
