Does anyone know were to find out information on lightning rod systems for barns and, really, if they are needed and how to protect horses from lightning strikes etc? Also I would like general information about lightning--what it is, what attracts it etc. Thanks!

We have a lightening rod on our house, and the house was struck by lightening before Christmas. Fried the water heater, microwave, pc, and doorbell system. If horses are turned out in a pasture, I don't think there is anything you can do....

I think the best thing you can do, Jan, is to bring the horses in during a storm if you are worried about it. Different kinds of ground attract lightning . . . . we have lots of ledge here in Vermont . . . . and if you pasture your horses on land that is on ledge, then there is probably a better chance of them getting hit. Around here in Vermont, there have been several horses, ponies and cows hit by lightning over the years. Sometimes they live, but not usually. I rarely see lightning rods on barns here unless they are very old barns. Whether those lightning rods ever got a chance to serve their purpose is something I don't know.
