I have no problem braiding my 11 year old thoroughbred gelding's mane. The forelock, however is a real problem. He is not head-shy and loves to have his forelock brushed. But braiding?? Look out! The head jerks up and he resists in every way possible. Any suggestions for braiding forelocks without twitching or other common control tactics?

Hi Pam

I had this problem at the weekend with my filly and I got round it by doing it from the side. Do you have problems pulling his forelock?

I figured that because my filly doesn't like having her forelock (or her mane for that matter!) pulled, that she thought I was going to pull it....

She was the same with her mane, and once she got the idea that I wasn't going to pull it, she calmed down.

Try it and see - it worked for me! You just have to be careful that you plait straight and not over to one side!

I find that strangely most horses are calmer about forelock plaiting if you stand on something quite high in front of them. They don't like it when you try to do the plaiting from below. I don't know why, it's just something I have noticed.
