Just out of curiosity, does anyone have experience with geldings squealing (soo loud), and at times, striking out? My gelding does this when meeting new geldings whether it be through fence, if he can reach on a trailer, next door in stalls, etc. He doesn't pin his ears, just gets all studdy looking and squeals so loud, then at times strikes out. Is it something I should be addressing or is he just being silly?

This is totally normal gelding behavior.

Sara really? It sounds like my mares.. squeals and strikes.. My geldings have never done this.. what they do is bite face and move on.. :-)

On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

I've seen this as well. Usually from 2 geldings, from separate pastures, who are playing over a fence and the play gets a bit rough

Ann, are you trying to tell me my geldings are abnormal?

My gelding that we had to put down used to act like this a lot...very stud like behaviour. And, my old gelding that I had years ago used to do this. My young gelding is the only one here now, so I can't say what he would do with another gelding.

My gelding does this, and looks absolutely stunning when he does... so no, your geldings aren't abnormal Sara :-)

In the past week, mine has been called a "drama queen" and my vet asked if he has "anxiety issues". So I suppose it all falls inline. Glad to hear that we are not alone!

Talking about geldings, I used to turn out my arab, Mystery, with one of our two ponys, a shetland, Shadow or a poa named Rambo. After they tired of running around, they used to play mouth games. He also did it with one of my neighbors geldings but I have never seen him do it with any of my mares. Have any of you seen that behavior? Cynthia

You mean where they keep trying to bite each other, nip each other's face, etc.? My geldings all did that, as did my stud colts when they were young.

No Sara, almost like kissing, all teeth to teeth and tongue. We almost took a video to send to funniest home videos. I have seen a video taken of two horses in adjoining stalls doing it.

Are they so close that they could touch but don't? Stand with their necks stretched out, mouths open and twisting their heads? All four of the horses here do that ... it is really quite comical :-) I call it biteface :-)

Aileen, yes that is pretty much how I would describe it. We no longer have the ponies, my sons are 23 & 25 yrs old but I wondered how many other people have horses who engage in this strange behavior. It is all in friendly play and I have never seen any of my mares do it. Cynthia

Hi Cynthia, I've had two mares here, only one did it for the first week, but not since... maybe it is a gelding thing?

My two geldings do that - the Mouth games - I agree America's funniest would love it - like French Kissing Horses. (SIC?) I believe it is totally normal play time for them - yea once in a while there is a bite mark on one or the other but pretty even across the board. Yea your horses are all normal in my book!
