Anyone have any references for how to prepare to take your Friesian to Keuring? Are there any books or articles out there?

Hi Joni,
My filly is half Friesian. Before I bred to her sire I attended a few Keurings to see what the breed ideals were.
They were pretty similar to sporthorse in-hand shows. Conformation is judged, and the horse is walked at different angles to analyze movement. Then they are trotted out fast by the runners (who show all the horses, so don't worry about your own running speed--these guys can keep up!).
Foals are trotted and shown with their dams alongide.
So I guess the things you can prepare are the following: teach your horse to "stand up" and show himself to best advantage (temperment is judged, too, so nice and obedient).
Teach yourself to walk and run without interfering in the horse's movement.
Practice trotting him out as fast as possible, even letting him get a bit ahead of you if necessary.
There is a great video available from tha U.S. Dressage Federation (I think that's where I got it) called "Showing your Sporthorse in Hand". Although it is not specific to Friesians, it has a lot of really helpfull advice for preparing for the keuring. One difference is that they don't show the Friesians on the triangle but trot them around a large enclosure.
The judges talk constantly, telling about how they are judging each horse, so if you can get there early to watch you will have a pretty good idea of what they like.
Good luck!
Erika
