There are some aussie saddle types that do better with short-backed horses than others. If you are interested, I can get you some of the info I collected on this type of saddle when I was "researching" whether an australian saddle would be the right thing for "my girl" (THW/QH mix, absolutely flat and short back, virually NO withers). I ended up NOT getting an autralian saddle... Christine |

Posted on Thursday, Feb 12, 2004 - 7:50 am: Katrina,I am curious as to why you don't like the Aussie saddles? My 9 yr old daughter rides in one, and I love it for the fact is seems like it is secure for her. I have been hoping to get one for myself because I am getting to the age where getting bucked off hurts for weeks instead of days it seems!! ((grin)) My current saddle is a treeless Bob Marshall Sport saddle. Very comfy for any horse, and myself. But nothing to lock the ol' knees under if you are on a bucker, trust me on that one. Is there a difference in how you sit in an Aussie vs an English saddle? I have never ridden in either one, but my daughter was in Pony Club for a yr, and she liked the English riding which led to the youth Aussie for her. Anyone have the new Aussie with the Cair package? they adjust to different withers apparently. Robert; your horse sounds like the same size as my daughters almost 2 yr old filly. I suggest you call some of the Aussie Mfgs directly and ask your questions. I did that a few yrs back, and they were very helpful. Unfortunately I don't remember who I talked to but if you do a websearch and find the main ones you'd come up with someone to talk to. At the time I did not get an Aussie because they were so specialized and fit only the horse you ordered it for. that has changed now or so they say. |

We tried wintec AP with interchangeable gullets, the measuring device suggested a medium wide, turned out even the extra wide did not fit.Does anyone have experience with the "Free 'n' Easy" made in the U.K.? |

Posted on Thursday, Feb 12, 2004 - 4:45 pm: Robert--I bought a saddle from Down Under using the sizing guidelines they provided. The saddle did NOT fit through the withers and they would not adjust it, nor would they take it back. The saddle was of very average quality, and the black color RUBBED OFF all over my jeans every time I rode in it. I found them extremely unresponsive once they found out I was not pleased with their product. I would not deal with them again, and have spoken with several others who had similar experiences. Be sure to realize that these are not "authentic" aussie saddles, but reproductions made in India. A real aussie saddle's price is more in line with a high-quality western saddle (over $1000). I ended up auctioning my saddle on ebay, and got $500 for it including ALL FITTINGS. I had over $1000 in it. I bought a used Crates for $200 from TackTrader.com and have never been happier. Proceed with caution. |

Posted on Thursday, Feb 12, 2004 - 5:53 pm: Robert,A friend uses a true aussie on her Peruvian and is happy with it. I have a Fox Poley from these guys; https://www.aussiesaddle.com/. I have been very happy with it and it fits all my MFT well (it is a bit tight on my 17h boy now, it did fit when he was smaller) and we put it on a POA once with good results. The Fox Poley is really a hybrid; aussie saddle with western fenders and a horn. Just keep in mind it is a good utility saddle ($850), not the quality of a true aussie ($2500), you definitely get what you pay for. Another option is the aussie sold by Clinton Anderson and made by a saddle maker in Scottsdale, AZ. I have one and really like it, a bit more expensive but it fits my 17h MFT really good (has full quarter bars). Good day, Alden |

Posted on Thursday, Feb 12, 2004 - 8:37 pm: Hi Angie,I am not sure why I didnt like them. All the cowboys on the farms where I grew up rode in them. The pads hurt the front of my thighs. Maybe because I did many sporting events, jumping you name it. I just did not like the feel of them. They look like the perfect saddle to look at. To many people, especially ausie cowboys they are the way to go. I rode in many and they were the real thing. I guess I was just used to all purpose saddles for my type of riding. I do have the wintec cair 2000 with adjustable gullet now and love it. Katrina |

Posted on Thursday, Feb 12, 2004 - 9:27 pm: Hi Robert,Here are a few sites that might be of interest if you are looking for an aussie saddle. I know Toowoomba Saddlery do handle overseas orders - don't know about the rest. I'm an aussie myself, and I've ridden in a number of stock saddles as we call them. From a rider's point of view, they do feel a little more secure. I would personally recommend Syd Hill saddles. I have a Syd Hill saddle (gp, not stock saddle) that I bought second hand about 20 years ago, and it's still going strong. https://www.valleycountry.com.au/brands/sydhill/default.htm https://www.sydhill.com/ https://www.ozsaddle.com/ https://www.southerncrosssaddlery.com.au/ Cheers, Robyn |

Posted on Sunday, Dec 12, 2004 - 8:04 pm: I don't think he is selling them any longer, at least he isn't advertising them. I have one and like but I don't remember who was making them for him.If you really want to see it I could send you a couple pictures but it would be a couple days, we are moving and the saddle is at the new house. He was selling a couple different saddle types, this one is the hybrid (mostly western, a little aussie), there was an all western version also. Good day, Alden |
