My friend has a 3yr old draft/paint. This mare is absolutely fabulous under saddle except... whether your walking, trotting or cantering she will what our trainer calls "root". She will quickly pull her head down nose tucked under. Sometimes frequently, sometimes only a couple of times. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. She changes nothing else when she going, she doesn't slow down, try to stop, nothing.

The question is how do you break her of this? She is literally a perfect angel under saddle. She has very poor ground manners though(owner tolerates).

Any suggestion?

What kind of bit is she in? How much pressure is kept on the reins? Is she getting "relief" when she's doing things right? Also, how are her teeth? Does the bit fit her correctly? All of these things could be factors. I'd check all this before assuming it's strictly a behavior/training problem.
