I have a 2 yr old TB colt, he is showing a lot of potential but after winning a trial by 5 lenghts he then came last in his first race he then trialed again and won by 5 and 3/4 lenghts he raced again today and came last the jockey said he jumped out of the barriers and held his breath. Is this a nervous/excited response any ideas on how to get him to take a breath whilst racing. Has anybody else had experiance with a horse that has this problem, any help would be much appreciated. David.

Hello David, I know this is a old post but thought I would ask is the horse still doing this. Though I do not have any specific experience with such a problem when I read this originally, and noted it was a 2 year old, I thought just give him a little time. DrO

Dear Dr O Thank you for your response, as you can see by the date i have not checked in for a while, (Southern Hempisphere breeding season). The colt was taken to Sydney University Equine Centre, after extensive (and expensive) diagnostic test's ( Treadmill , ECG, Endoscope's at rest and work etc, etc) he was found to have a mild upper and lower respiratory infection, drug's and a 3 month spell were advised, after a lengthy spell a slow training program, he again (now as a 3yr old) won another trial last week by 6 lenghths, a decsion has again been made to spell him and quite possibly geld him. I will let you know when he wins his first race. David/Yvette.

Thank you David, Subclinical lower respiratory inflammation is becoming the big topic for under-performing race horses. Thanks for the update. DrO
