I am thinking of buying a new or used Western Saddle to be used for trail riding. I'd like to find something durable, all leather, that is comfortable for all day riding. Quality is very important, but I don't show, so it doesn't need to look fancy. My horse is a quarterhorse and pretty average as far as fitting goes. Any suggestions on brands would be appreciated. Thanks, Linda

Hi Linda, I have a Crates that is specifically made for trail riding. Crates is an excellent brand and is very well made. It has a flex-tree and is pretty comfortable. Also Tucker makes a very nice saddle that is comfy and comes in a variety of tree sizes. Tuckers also have a number of dees to attach a crupper or britchin' and breast collar. Colorado Saddlery has a large selection of types and are an excellent saddle. For trail riding, you'd want a saddle with a fairly high cantle and good sized swells in front to lock you in going up or down hills. Your local tack shop generally carries some used saddles and should be able to steer you in the right direction. Happy trails. Holly

I must weigh in with Holly on the Crates. I bought one used from Tacktrader.com two years ago for $200---probably the best deal I ever got on tack. It is a classic....comfortable, durable; was already 10 years old when I got it and probably has 20 years left in it! I went through an Aussie saddle (saddle fit problems with that) and a Circle Y cordura (just not comfortable enough). LOVE the Crates. Good luck!! Oh--I also like Tex Tan for trail saddles...if I were buying new, I'd look at one of those.

Thanks Terri and Holly for your suggestions. I did some checking and so far am leaning toward the Crates. Thanks again. Linda
