So what are the odds that my "perfect" filly will turn into the perfect horse? She has shown absolutely NO negative effects from being started ...Not even at the Canter for the first time last night ... aside from showing that she doesn't understand by tossing her head just a bit and stopping... Once praised she puffs up with pride Thanks so much!!

Keep thinking like that and she WILL stay perfect in your eyes.. <wink> .. ok that being said.. I have started a few young horses.. and have found that the first 90 days are cake.. then they start ''testing'' the boundaries, nothing serious, but tests. Can I get away with a bolt? a buck? not wanting to go THERE , a rub on the rail?? Stay consistent with what you ask her do , don't over work her, and don't expect her to do grand prix work too soon.. have fun.. she sounds like a pleaser... On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted the good ones!

I think its an individual thing about over working a young horse.. some mature fast and can handle more ''thinking'' others still have the baby at pasture mind and just can't ''think'' for long bouts of time.. I work most of mine just 3 days a week with lots of rests when we are working.. .. I don't do much canter work at this age... I work on balance and rhythm at the trot for now. the canter will come when the horse is more muscled...I try to keep them on a large oval circle, so as not to stress the joints, I work on voice commands as well. ( a good WHOA sure comes in handy sometimes.. ) if you have sent your horse out to a trainer, most likely she is being worked at least 5 days a week.. if so. .when you bring her home let her have that long over due rest.. let her grow and mature some more.. .. I have seen horses come home from a trainer FRIED... being pushed to fast tooo soon... enjoy, the young ones know no wrong... we teach it to them.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted the good ones!
