Any opinions out there on the best side reins to use? Donuts, no donuts? Leather? Sliding? Also, anything special to look for in a longeing cavesson?

For me, it depends on the horse and its stage of training. I've a set of conventional side reins with donuts and a set of vienna sliding reins in my kit. When I use it, I prefer a leather lunging cavesson with a padded nose but reinforced for sturdiness. I also tend to "graduate" to lunging without the cavesson. Look for one that has lots of "adjustments" and the the throat strap is in a place where it can be buckled/useful.

Hi, Ellie, Elastic inserts are not necessary and may actualy invite some horses to test their stretch limit all the time, an annoying habit that may creep into work under saddle later on as rein pulling. Fixed side reins are very good, just remember to start them as low as possible, with the horse's face always in front of the vertical. Sliding ones are tricky with some horses, if the horse's head carriage is naturally too high or too low they may actually exaggerate the problem.
