Dr. O,

I'm interested in using Epsom Salts instead of the more expensive Mg supplements. How do I calculate the dosage of espon salts to give?

Thanks,
Melissa

Hello Melissa,
There is no established dosage for supplementing Mg to calm a horse. Though there is some anecdotal evidence that it might be helpful there are no published scientific studies one way or the other that this might help. There is also controversy about Mg absorption from different sources.

I guess you could take the dosage off of some of the supplements but calculating a equal molar dosage may require some knowledge of molecular weights and a fine weight scale to calculate.

All things considered if you wish to try this, I see nothing wrong with a few level tablespoons in the feed twice a day.

I have a question regarding Magnesium supplements. About 2 weeks ago I put my Warmblood on the supplement Quiessence. I is magnesium and Chromium in a Barley/Corn grain mix in order to be palatable. Originally, my Dressage instructor recommended due to the fact that he gets very nervous and tight at shows. But about a week ago (after being on the supplemet for 1 week) he started behaving more erraticly - was very nervous and more exciteable. Since the supplement was the only thing that I have changed - I called the manufacturer and they said it could be the grain base. Has anyone every had this experience?
Thanks,
Nancy

Is the grain in addition to what has been normally fed and how much more?
