Hi all. I wanted to check in to get anyone's opinion on round pen panels. I have a 50 foot round pen, wood fence with sand footing. Of course the sand goes out, but I'm more concerned with the horses legs hitting the wood post/fence. Anyone have any suggestion on panels I could place on the bottom? Thanks bunch.

We have owned two round pens. the first was in Arizona - we bought it used. it had 12 *1 inch boards attached to the bottom of the panels to keep the sand for footing in the arena. we only schooled in there the horses didn't "live" in there at any time. when we moved to NM, we bought panels for a new pen that is set over Dirt, filled with Wood shavings and more dirt. yes they material is 'run' out of the arena from time to time but the work involved in putting on the Wood on the bottom of each panel (this is a very large round pen) was too great so we opted to leave this one alone. I believe both do and did the job. but if you're worried about material leaving - try the boards on the bottom of the panels.

Lydia, are you thinking of switching to metal panels? If so the only ones I have had a problem with are the ones that are put together with vertical pins shaped like a candy cane. I have seem some ugly cuts caused by the bottoms of the pins. I have worked horses in other kinds of metal panels, wood post and rail, post and plank, wood post and poly fence products, and solid wall pens and have never had a problem with any of those. Some horses occasionally bump the posts or rails but so long as they are sturdy and have no sharp edges I'd think you'd be OK.
