Has anyone had cribbing surgery done on their horse? The success rates seem pretty high but I heard it works better on 3 - 5 year olds. My gelding is 7 and is a moderately bad cribber. I'm tired of dealing with the collars and had a hard time finding a barn to board at because no one wanted to take in a cribber. Also, does the surgery change the way they look any? I would like to show him.

Hello Jillian,
Which surgical procedure are you thinking about. We describe them in the article and some do cause fairly remarkable changes in appearance, but this too is covered in the article.

It sounds like the combination of the neurectomy and the radical myectomy is the best option. If I read it correctly it had high success rates and cosmetically looked fine. I talked to a vet about the surgery but forgot to ask him which procedure he used. He stated an 85% success rate and said the neck would look normal after. My concerns now are also about the cost, which he said would run about $1800. Is the surgery worth the price?

Hello Jillian,
That is something only you can decide. Not knowing your goals and resources we have no way to judge. If you are asking is this a fair price get the anesthetic and surgical procedure used and call around.

Years ago I had a Trakehner gelding that cribbed.Got him an operation and after the operation [his neck looked fine btw] he started windsucking without getting hold of something just by throwing his head and gulping air. Don't know if this is exceptional but the 'goat in his stable for company' and collar worked best.

thanks for responding. I'm going to call around but I think I'll have to wait a year or so to get it done as I'm in school at this point and can't afford an elective surgery.
