I was wondering what is considered normal for a horse to lay down and nap. Of my 4 horses 3 do not lay down for long periods to nap. My horse Moose on the other hand is a long (an hour or so) and frequent (4-5 times a day-including night) napper. That doesn't include standing naps...which he does as well. He has always been in the 5 years I've had him, nothing out of the ordinary for him. He is going on 18 and a big boy. He's sound and spry. I am only asking out of curiosity as the others don't do it.

Love the picture! Imo, he feels very comfortable and relaxed and enjoys the sun. I have a couple of mares that seemed to nap in the sun several times a day. I think they were just sunbathing and enjoying themselves. I suppose a heart condition could cause extra tiredness; Dr.O can comment on that. I personally, wouldn't really worry.

I agree with Sara - I see a wide variety of "nap behaviors" among the horses at the barn. Some nap more frequently than others and some nap for longer periods than others.

As long as nothing is out of the ordinary, I wouldn't worry either.

I love to see those sleepy faces when they look up after a good snooze!

My experience is as stated by Sara and Fran.

At times I have been know to get horses up just to make sure that they were okay. When they are in deep sleep they can seem pretty "out of it."

They are all individuals and you will learn what is normal appearance and behavior for each.

It sounds like Moose is extraordinarily comfortable in his surroundings.

Perhaps he has the others standing guard for him.

I thought I read that Seabiscuit loved to nap, and his trainer always made sure that he got enough sleep. Correct me if I am wrong about this.
