I have been using the latigo strap as a connector between this and the cinch ring. I slip the lever under the D-ring and then pull it down and quick tie it down with the little ring.

Do any of you members know what it is named or what the "real" use for it might be?

Hi Lori,
It was not part of my saddle, but I got it in a tack store, and there wasn't anyone there that could tell me. It looked like it had a purpose, and I like to figure things out so I picked it up.

I've had it for close to 15 years. It's so handy, I wish I could get a few more for my riding friends to try. That's hard to do when I do not know what it is

Doesn't anyone know what this is? I was really hoping that someone on this forum could help. Can anyone even point me in a direction that I might be able to find out?

It works for that, but I don't know if that's its real purpose. It's a "Rapunzel" to me.

I've never seen this before. What is the name stamped on it? I couldn't quite make it out. I also love puzzles and this is a good one.

Never seen this before...in fact, I didn't realize that there were alternate designs to make cinching up a western saddle easier. Your item looks kinda like this Mikmar design, so my guess is that it's another cinch buckle design that's no longer around:

Hi Susie, I have posted the images on another forum to see if anyone there could identify it. We are all very curious now as to what it actually is.

Do you know if the tack store that you got if from still exits? would it be possible (if it's still there ) that someone might know the answer?

Linda, I bought the only one in the store. I'll take it with me and ask if ever I'm in that town. I did check back several years ago and they didn't know then.

Sara good idea. I had thought those were numbers, but doing a graphite rub, it actually says "CROCKETT." That's helpful. Sharon, I knew the device you pointed to as a tackberry, and it sure does seem like a similar device, doesn't it.

Crockett used to be a well known spur and bit maker. I googled the name to see if they were around still, and found several sites with vintage spurs, bits and tack. One site, www.cowboygear.com had a vintage McClelean cavalry saddle. On the saddle, in front of the girth, was an attachment that looked similar to your "gizmo." I couldn't see it well enough to be sure, but it looks like something to tie things onto; maybe to attach a rifle case, since that is the location where one would be attached. The rifle case has a buckle on it and maybe this ties or attaches to the saddle and the rifle case buckles into it??

This site might help you; if you send a picture they might be able to tell you what it is, or find out. This is a cool site if you like puzzles or odd things. My son put me onto it.

You're welcome Susie, this sure is turning out to be a very interesting item.

One of the girls on the forum has asked if you could take a picture of the way it is being used

I will go and post the name of the maker to see if that helps any.

Hi Susie, wow nice area, I bet you have lots of great trails to ride on.

As for the mystery item, it seems so far that the consensus is that it is probably a quick cinch from long ago...if any new information on it and I will post it.
