I have zero interest in giving the world a coke, but a carrot in every horse's feed bowl??? Now that's the way to go. He is well put together and I like his posture. He's gonna be FUN! |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 6, 2010 - 8:19 pm: Beautiful animal! What's he doing in MD? The Keiger's are from western Utah I think. If he'd pure blooded Keiger, he's quite rare. Good thing I don't need another horse, esp. a stallion and non-Arab! I hope he finds a good home. He's lovely and the Keigers have a reputation for being really great horses, very smart and responsive. |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 6, 2010 - 11:20 pm: ;) Close Sara, the Kigers are from Oregon, and a Kiger is normally purebred. One of the last herds descended directly from the spanish iberians.Yes they are amazing horses, incredibly smart. Well they managed to not get discovered until the 1970s. I have quite a few friends that have them, course they are always trying to get me to get one too. Most of them have gotten their horses out of the wild, but there is now a couple of good breeders out here. |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 6, 2010 - 11:28 pm: Yup he is handsome, but it's really hard to tell in these photos if he is truly a Kiger. They usually have very distinctive markings and coloring. Unfortunately many people will have a mustang that is a Dunn with nice Dunn markings and say it's a Kiger.I almost bought a mare a year ago thinking it was a Kiger, as she was advertised, but when I looked at her, it didn't seem like she was truly a Kiger. I took photos of her freeze brand and then checked with the BLM and of course that proved she wasn't a Kiger. The person is still advertising her as a Kiger! ugh. I will forward this ad though cause I know quite a few people looking for a nice mustang. |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 10:47 am: Sara, mine is from Beatty Butte Ore.and I started with Rick Littletons Kigers. He owned the horse that played Spirit for the Disney movie. The BLM was so proud of them and guarded them for several years. But recently they have been gathered as have all the rest of the mustangs. Yes this guy may be very rare indeed. His freeze brand would confirm but his color and confirmation speak of true breeding. |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 1:06 pm: I'm trying to understand the difference between a "Kiger" and a "regular" mustang, as I was under the impression that all wild horses were descended from the Spanish horses of many hundred of years ago. Cindy, can you clear up my confusion? And if they are being rounded along with other mustangs via the horrific mismanagement of the BLM, are the Kigers endangered? I'm thinking out loud here: if they are endangered could this not be used to stop the BLM from rounding up more wild horses? |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 1:17 pm: I just got larger photos of this guy and he is definitely a Kiger, and even more stunning in the larger photos. geeeez I don't need another horse, but man this is tempting!! |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 1:46 pm: Fran, (Sorry not Cindy here, I am sure she will answer too!)The difference between a Kiger and a 'regular' mustang is almost like night and day. ;) And yes there are now two Kiger herd locations, I forgot they did split the herd to help preserve it. Course some of us were against that... The usual Kiger mustang comes only from the Kiger herds; has a very baroque body build, they are much "beefier" in build as they have the direct spanish blood (think Lipizzan, Lusitano, Andalusian type of body but with thicker legs than these breeds tend to have today), they are Dunn and have the dorsal stripe and zebra stripe markings on the legs, neck, etc. theirs are usually pretty pronounced. AND the usual additional marking is a tri-colored mane and tail. Not all Kigers have the tri-colored mane and tail, but most of them do. They are kept separate from other mustangs in their own herd areas. So being there are only two herd locations, you can check any mustang's brand and know where it came from, if it came from the wild and not a breeder, and if not from one of these two herd areas then it cannot possibly be a Kiger. I met a Kiger stallion years ago that was blood red, he had a coal black mane and tail, and he was by far the most unusual color I had ever seen and the most magnificent horse I had ever seen before. I mean he was red, red, red. Like almost fire engine red, yup that red! We very much wanted an offspring from him, hoping for one the same unusual color because it was so striking, but he passed... unfortunate. I will never forget him. The first horse my husband ever took notice of, and that horse really liked my hubby too. Oh well. Most of the 'regular' mustangs I have seen are kinda scruffy looking, not very refined looking for the most part, and yet the Kigers are more refined looking in comparison. (the ones I know of) |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 2:02 pm: Ah, c'mon Terrie--we need a new horse saga to follow and this is a "few of a kind" guy! |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 2:04 pm: And $500.00!!! Really, you might get a nice Friesian/Kiger cross foal that would sell for more than that! |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 2:37 pm: *snarffle* You guys, honestly! haha Don't think I haven't been thinking about that for more than a few years...He is a fab price, cause most Kigers out here start at 3000.... (yeah ok not the BLM ones. LOL) He is very tempting, even the cross country transport cost'd be worth it! hmmmmmm |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 2:38 pm: Thanks Terrie for clearing up the difference. But the Kigers are mentally some of the best horses one can own. They just developed in an isolated area and you can spot a Kiger like a white car in a lot of brown cars! They are so much fun! Think about this guy, pass it on and find him a home. |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 3:03 pm: Don't worry about the transport--Cyndy will handle that (except the cost, which I'm sure will be very reasonable! Don't hold back Cyndy, let Terrie know what business you're in!! |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 4:38 pm: Thank you, Terrie! ( I asked Cindy only cuz she had started the thread, but certainly don't mind who answers)Because I really love the Andalusians/Lusitanos, I'm intrigued with these Kigers and the links of the Kigers did remind me of the more baroque horses. Would love to see one in person some day. |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 7, 2010 - 4:41 pm: Who...me??? Cindy sold me on this guy a couple of posts up...Plan A-Figure out how to build an extension onto the barn and talk Boerney into selling me the other 5 acres I want out back REAL CHEAP.... take the top down on My mustang, drive the 6 hours and throw this guy in the back seat???? Walt is hauling in Utah right now, by the time he gets back here and figures it out....well, I'll think of something...I could tell Walt I am going up to DC for an appt with Senator Graham, he will buy that, and he doesn't need to know about the little side trip to Baltimore to see this guy... What do you think? Have I been working in the sun too long today???? Plan B- Terrie buys him and we build a week overnighting here into the trip west LOL. |
